NCP is taking over the world

I have just got back from a quick trip into town to buy a birthday present for my friend and was shocked at the cost of the car parking ticket that was waiting for me at the other end. Prices of the car park have just gone up yet again and it now costs £2.20 just to park in this particular center for an hour, £3.60 for two and £4.80 for up to three hours. Seeing as it's only £2.70 for a day rider on the bus and with the cost of petrol always on the up, it seems as though I should start leaving my car behind.

The most expensive film I've ever seen

I have been wondering for a while what the point of renting from Blockbuster is nowadays with the charge of new release DVD rental for one night being so high. It seems that the company is completely fleecing customers while there is still a market for rental before online downloading becomes a more prominent reality. Our house has been hit hard by their extortionate charges as we decided to rent Saw 4 before Easter and completely forgot to return it the next day. I remembered a few days later and made sure the DVD was returned straight away. Unfortunately, as the account is in my name, I am held responsible for everyone's mistake and have recently received a letter claiming £24 in late charges. As my house mates are reasonable and understand it was a collective mistake, we are splitting the costs but I don't think we'll ever be renting from Blockbuster again.

Another day in paradise...

Things have been pretty hectic up here this past week. Apart from spending every spare minute of the day (well at least a few of them) pouring over books in the library I had a group of friends pay me a visit for 21st birthday. We did an otley run (a 20 something bar crawl through to the center of Leeds) for her birthday which has even hurt the wallets of my working friends. Unfortunately I haven't budgeted my money at all well this term (I know what you're thinking - what's new) the result being that I owe a lot of people a lot of money and as soon as I get paid for work done at Easter it will all disappear.

I'm annoyed with myself for many reasons but mainly because I had decided to go home this week and now can't afford to fill up my tank. I'm just really distracted at University at the moment and thought that being in a quiet, clean and relaxed environment would help me to revise for my upcoming exams. Two of my house mates have already taken this path of action and gone home but it's a bit harder for me as I live at least a four hour drive away.

I also have a few things I have to stay up north for including a performance at my union on Thursday. One of my friends is raising money for RAG - a charity run by my University and so is holding an X Factor style competition in one of my union bars at which I have agreed to play with Dave's band 'The Vangos'.

Bank overdraft fees

I was told yesterday that the case regarding unfair fees charged by banks when an overdraft limit is exceeded has finally been passed by the courts. This means that soon the FSA should release the hold on reclaiming these fees and I should be able to acquire quite a sum from my bank (as I've exceeded my overdraft a fair few times!)

This is also good news for the account that we share for bills as a house which has been overdrawn quite a few times due to the timing of our standing orders in relation to when the bills come out of the account. I'm guessing it won't be an easy or speedy process but it's worth doing as we're charged £38 every time the limit is exceeded.

Library fines

I'm now no longer able to take books out of my libraries because I've racked up fines equal to over £30. My account isn't the worst I've seen though as today a letter came for Natalie from the University saying that seeing as she still hasn't returned a book due over a month ago she is going to have to pay for a replacement. Overall she owes £84 to the University libraries and unless she pays this off before the end of next year she may not be able to graduate.

As exams are less than two weeks away, it's pretty annoying not having a fully operational library account but at the moment I can't afford to pay it off. My priorities have hardly been in the right place as the other day I managed to spend over £30 on Mario Kart for the Wii which is just going to aid revision procrastination.

In addition to this I have quite a few friends descending on me over the weekend who are visiting to celebrate our friend Kat's 21st birthday. We're going on an Otley run (bar crawl through 22 pubs along one long road passing through Headingley) dressed as famous people. I'm going shopping later in the week to try and sort out an outfit on the cheap - Primark here I come.

Top up fees still on the rise

This week MP Bill Rammell Education Secretary visited Leeds University to hold a question and answer session regarding the ever increasing tuition fees students are expected to pay. Next year, fees are rising from the current £3,070 to £3,145 and students are not happy about it. To highlight the issues surrounding top up fees, myself and Virginia have written arguments for the big debate section of our Leeds Student newspaper. My argument (against the increase) is below.

Another academic year is drawing to a close and most students should be thinking about applying or re-applying for their student loans. The loans are not repayable until earning over £15K and do not feel like a reality for most because the money is paid directly from the government to the University.

All students have to do is sign a form. The sad truth is that over three years at University students can rack up close to £20K of debt; a drastically earth-grounding figure. To make matters worse, fees are on the up and show no signs of stopping, despite many student protests.

But why do fees keep increasing? The increase won't make that much of a difference to the income of England's Universities, especially because of the extra grants and bursaries that will have to be handed out. This just leaves more scope for the figure to keep going up.

I don't see how the government are encouraging young people to enter into higher education by placing such large fees on the cost of university. Understandably, these institutions need resources, buildings, staff, lecturers etc and these things are not going to pay for themselves. However, I think that there must be a line drawn on how far the government expects students to pay for this education.

It seems as though the priorities of the government are not with the improvements of its own country. Although they do seem to be able to spare the cash to fund, in my opinion, an un-just war in which they are helping to destroy another.

It's unlikely that there are many students out there who welcome top-up fees and as we've seen through campus protests there are certainly enough who are strongly against it. But why does the government keep ignoring us?

It's just ridiculous to expect a £20K figure of debt not to be off-putting to potential students and for those already paying, it's a constant worry. Charging students almost three times the amount for tuition than expected two years ago is not a reasonable solution to the problem that faces our Universities. Something needs to be done soon to prevent further increases.

Birthday drinks

So I had a really great weekend thanks to all my lovely friends. Apart from breakfast in bed, presents and a great excuse to ignore my pile of work for a few days I got to go out in the evening for the first time since getting back to uni. On Friday night we went to a casino where some were extremely lucky and others not so! One of my friends managed to make £38 on her first two bets and so left the tables and sat at the bar for the rest of the night, while another lost £45 and was considering something drastic.

On Saturday we went to a club in the City center and I have to say, due to many a birthday drink bought for me, I didn't end up spending that much money but still felt the effects! All in all I had a great weekend which was well worth deviating from my newly placed budget.

My plan (however unlikely it is that I will follow) is to only attend two further nights out before my exams - both for friend's birthdays. All going well this should help to save me quite a bit of money so that after exams I'm not completely broke. I just have to try and stay away from clothes shops in the mean time...

The small room

Or as it's being called by my house mates - 'the dud room' which I was just lucky enough to pick out of a hat!

Our land lady came round today to remind us that we have to be moved out of this house by the 30th June which is all fine and dandy apart from the fact that we can't move into our new house until the 1st of July. This is a bit of a problem for me as it's not really logical to move all of my possessions down to London for all of one night just to move them all back up again. I think I'm going to have to look into some kind of storage system or something instead. The discussion of moving prompted a spontaneous decision to decide rooms by picking them out of a hat. Unfortunately for me I got the smallest room. I'm not really that bothered but do think that I'll have to cut down on a lot of my things as this year I had the biggest room so acquired quite a few possessions.

The first week back at Uni has been pretty painless money-wise as I've been completely swamped under by revision and essay-writing so haven't had the chance to do much. I'm sure that will all be about to change as this weekend it's my birthday and I have quite a few things planned. Tomorrow night we're making a group trip down to a casino in town (possibility to spend/lose a lot of money) and Saturday night we have a big night out organized. After a short break it will be straight back to the library to continue the uphill struggle to exams in May so I think it will be a good term to save some cash.

April 15

Hello, goodbye

My loan may have entered my account this weekend but no sooner than I had noticed it's arrival did the majority of it leave my grasps again. Among the culprits responsible for the quick decrease in my balance were my mother (who loaned me money over the Easter holidays), Virginia (who pays the bills in our house), Orange, Vodafone and Leeds University Library. It turns out you can't take out books when you owe the library over a certain amount of money and they won't let you graduate with any debt on your library record.

I've realized that our method for paying the house bills isn't very effective as we always seem to be topping up the account in order for it to not go overdrawn. At the moment we each pay £20 into the account monthly but each bill comes out at separate times, generally on a quarterly basis. This has resulted in bad timing between our payments and the removal of funds which has caused our account to get into debt. Hopefully there will be money left over at the end of the year which we will share out among ourselves. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

A severe shock to the system

So I’ve had a pretty bad past few days...

On Tuesday I leant over to pick up my phone and managed to spill a glass of Fanta over my mobile, notes and laptop. Fortunately everything still seems to be working as it was only a couple of days before I was shouting down the phone at an insurance company telling them I didn't want their policy and I would like them to leave me alone. How tragically ironic that would have been. The turning on my computer to complete the essay I started writing the day before, I found that everything I wrote had gone. I must have not saved it properly and just like that I lost 1000 words of my work.

Then, this morning I woke up to find that the foxes had got into the rubbish bags outside thus littering my entire garden with trash. After cleaning this up I decided to sort through and do some recycling but this took hours and wasn't the most fun of jobs. Getting back into the house, I find two letters on my porch - one from Vodafone telling me I have to pay a bill within 24 hours or I will be charged more and one from Orange (the account I am using) with a ridiculously expensive bill. I don't want to write how much it is as my mother reads this blog (hi mum) and will no doubt kill me. The problem is I can't pay either of these bills off yet as I'm still awaiting my loan to come through.

Looking at the itemisation of my bill it seems that I'm just not used to my new price plan as I don't have as many minutes as I used to but unlimited texts instead. One thing's for sure - I am going to be making no phone calls this month.

Even though it's been a rubbish couple of days, instead of whinging (I am aware that all above amounts to a huge load of whinging) I'm going to sort my life out financially. I have to stop relying on people to bail me out of situations I can blame no one but myself for getting into. It's not as though I haven't had to opportunity to do this before but I guess when there's money sitting in my account I think it should be spent. I have learned from my mistakes the hard way.

April 07

Oh to be a kid again

I've just got back from visiting the hygienist at my dental practise and am still in shock at how much I had to pay. Over £30 to have my teeth cleaned! I somehow don't think I'll be going back every six months like they recommend. Instead maybe I'll just start flossing...

Never bet on a horse named after an alcoholic drink...

I also forgot to mention that I unfortunately did not win the Grand National as I chose an outsider called Vodka Bleu that I don't even think managed to finish. £5 wasted. My sister, however, did win and hasn't stopped gloating about it since.

Final week before loan comes in

My family are away this week in Devon and have left myself and my  older brother in charge of the house. As it's my birthday in a couple of weeks I decided to have a few people round on Saturday (this was approved by the mother) which meant that I saved quite a bit of money on not going out. However it also meant that I spent most of yesterday cleaning up the house (and messing around in the snow).

I decided to take this week off work so that I could catch up with some uni work which means that I have to become a recluse for a week, well until the weekend anyway. I don't get paid for the work I did last week until Friday and seeing as my loan doesn't come in until Sunday (Saturday night as I've discovered before whilst out and about) it's not like I can do much anyway. Instead I'm going to be all productive and aim to complete an essay, some Spanish revision, take my CVs into a few agencies and try to remember to feed my pets daily (!)

In good news, I was able to pay my phone bill off the other day which meant they didn't cut me off! It's the small mercies...

April 02

To bet or not to bet

Saturday 30th March - £15 on meal with friends + ?? on a night out (I honestly can't remember what I spent but that's because I was not only buying my drinks but those of friends who I owed money).
Tuesday 1st April - £33.80 spent on weekly return to London stations + £12 for the week spent on lunch.

Apart from my big spend on Saturday I haven't been too bad with my money this week although I realise I could have saved some money by taking my own lunches to work. My plan is to win big on the Grand National this Saturday and then my debts will no longer be a problem... stupid I know.

Those were the horror stories I was used to hearing in first year about those students who had taken their whole loan and placed it on a horse. I'm not going to be so extravagant (I think my mother would skin me alive if I lost) but I will place a small bet just for fun. I still remember when my Dad used to let me put a pound on any horse I wanted - I used to think if I won I would be raking it in!

Some of my friends from Leeds are coming down to visit me this weekend so hopefully it won't be an expensive one as we'll just stay in, have a bbq and watch the race.

March 31

A week of surnames and postcodes

276... is the number of postcodes I've entered into a spreadsheet since arriving at work this morning. I expect that figure to be in the tens of thousands by the end of this week. Even though this job isn't very challenging or exciting, it's a good contact to have as the company always need help and are flexible with hours of work. Besides, nothing can get me down this week as I am getting paid! I will have to automatically hand a fair chunk over to my parents but there'll still be a reasonable sum left over for me. With such a short term at Uni (14th of April to the 24th of May) it may be slightly easier to save some of my loan for my summer break.

So far I'm only booked up for a family holiday this summer as I need to be available for as long as possible in order to increase my chances of getting work. As I'm not working next week I'm going to head into a few agencies with my CV. I've tried this before but around June when they're at their busiest with all the students returning home for the summer. Hopefully I will be luckier going in earlier...
